This lesson is a short one, illustrating a funk type groove or "solo" that can be played with one hand.The key to learning something like this is to practice each measure slowly, over and over until you can repeat it from
memory. That way each phrase will be internalized before you try and put them all together. There are tricky spots in this
piece, but hopefully you'll find it worth the effort.
"I don't play the groove exactly as written. At the time they were recorded I wasn't able to play the 16th
note bass figures in both endings cleanly, so I subbed something similar on the snare instead. I also play the groove a bit
slower and more swung than was originally intended. This gives the groove a laid back "old-school funk" sort of feel. Also,
the fills were written to be played on a 5-piece set. But, because I'm playing a 4-piece in the examples, any note to be played
on the middle tom is played on the high tom, and any note to be played on the high tom is played on the snare. - Rob Richard"
